Where the Whitefish and Cutthroat Trout Play: Fly Fishing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Fly fishing Jackson Hole, enough said. Anybody who knows his or her fishing will
tell you that if there is a fisherman's heaven, it's in Wyoming. The trout
practically own the place. The streams teem with them, and get more crowded than
the Jackson Hole ski resort come first snowfall.
So if you're looking for some sporting good fly fishing, Jackson Hole, Wyoming is
your spot. Just bring the right flies to catch yourself some cutthroat trout. Find
yourself one of the following rivers or streams. And settle in for a calm day of
majestic scenery, flapping fins, and a tasty dinner of pan-fried fish.
Snake River is probably the best known waterway in this neck of the woods. The
cutthroat trout open season lasts from April till the end of October, but even
during the rest of the year here, you can fish for whitefish (except in March).
Also, avoid most of May to July because that's runoff season and the river doesn't
fish well then.
Gros Ventre River and Lower Slide Lake has much of the same season and runoff times
as Snake River. You can also expect to find the occasional rainbow trout here. A
good spot to ford into the stream is just outside of the Grand Teton National Park
Exit, just off Route 89/191 out of Jackson. However, in high water, fording may not
be such a good idea, so use common sense.
Upper Gros Ventre River and Crystal Creek offers the best fishing after run-off,
from about early July to the end of August. Like the previous two fishing hotspots,
you can expect your fill of cutthroats and whitefish, but the Upper Gros Ventre
River can be home to brookies, too, especially in its tributaries. Again, you'll
want to wade in for best access to the hot fishing spots, such as near the campground
past Upper Slide Lake.
Flat Creek in the National Elk Refuge Section is one of the best fishing holes from
August to the end of October. The fish hop here from dawn to dusk during the
beginning of the season, but come more in the middle of the day when temperatures
cool in the fall. Keep your eyes out for this treasure when you're on the Grand Teton
National Park road headed out of Jackson. The exits for Flat Creek are at the National
Wildlife Museum and the National Fish Hatchery entrance.
Hoback River offers a prime-time season that typically stretches into September. The
Hoback is deep enough to support raft fishing, though hard-bottom craft may not make
it through the river's rapids.
Of course, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is crisscrossed with streams and creeks that boast
some of the best fly fishing that a man or woman with a rod and a good cast could
ask for. These are just a handful that the old-timer locals would rather newcomers
not know about!
