One "Heli" of a Time: Heli-Skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Heli-skiing Jackson Hole-style is one of those once in a lifetime experiences, that
you can experience over and over! Each time, you'll say to yourself, "I'm already
high up in the mountains of the Wild West. How much farther 'out there' can I go?"
Then you get on that helicopter, and it takes you deep in the wilderness, where
untouched powder and acres of bowls and drops await. And you realize that you want to
go even farther "out there."
That's because when you go heli-skiing Jackson Hole-style, you reach an untouched
paradise, past the crowds at the traditional ski resorts and the tourism
(albeit relatively calm) surrounding Jackson. Some heli-skiing packages in and
around Wyoming also allow you to experience an unparalleled adventure in wilderness
living. You'll get to participate in activities that you wouldn't be able to enjoy
almost anywhere else. Heli-skiing packages can include:
Running a dog sled team as you take a tour of the untrammeled Wild West. We're
talking thousands of acres where all you can hear are the dogs panting and your
own echo.
Snowshoeing up and around some of the most famous peaks in the lower 48 states.
Yurt tripping on your own for a few days. If you want isolation, this is how you
get it. This sort of adventure, though, is truly for the advanced wilderness expert
and shouldn't be taken without the proper preparations and training.
Of course, once you're finished with the distractions, there's still the heli-skiing
to take care of. The major tour operators in the Jackson Hole area usually bring out
groups of five or six, along with a guide, for each package. They can even rent you
fat skis, for the true powder experience. Fat skis make it possible for someone who
has never tried deep powder to enjoy it the first time without a hitch.
With your fat skis in tow, you can expect to enjoy up to six heli runs per outing
(at an average cost of $600 to $700 per person). The costs includes transport to and
from the heli-skiing HQ, the guide, and of course, access to runs at anywhere from
12,000 to 15,000 vertical feet through more than 300,000 acres of untouched bowls,
forest trails, glades, and chutes. Not bad! Some great runs to expect include:
- Snake River Mountain Range
- Palisades Mountain Ranges
- Hoback Mountain Range
- Teton Mountain Range
- Gros Ventre Mountain Range
