How to Hoof It Through Big Sky Country: Hiking in Teton Valley

Teton Valley is in the heart of Big Sky country. It's where heaven and earth seem to fit together the best. The crystalline sky stretches blue and clear across forests of green, lakes of aquamarine, and mountains of brown and white. It's a place of tall tales and history, legend and lore.

The opportunities to get knee deep - sometimes literally - in the wilderness are endless. Hiking trails in Teton Valley roam for hundreds of miles through places like Targhee National Forest, Grand Teton National Park, the Teton Springs, and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. Surmount the Tetons. Hoof it to Old Faithful and watch one of the most famous eruptions in the world. Or stroll along the Idaho Falls Greenbelt that runs along the river.

This is the land that our forefathers traveled thousands of miles to settle, enduring unimaginable dangers and hardships just to partake in its breathtaking beauty. Luckily for you, you can partake in this natural splendor with a hike of a mere few miles.

Intermediate and Expert Trails

Table Mountain offers a 12.4 mile loop that will get your legs aching and your heart pumping. Its trailhead begins at the Teton Campground. On this trail are some of the best spots to view the Tetons and the west face of the Grand.

Devil's Staircase begins at the same trailhead as Table Mountain does. It's nearly half as short, though, at a 7.8 mile roundtrip.

Darby Wind and Ice Caves trail begins at the Darby Creek footbridge. It's a 6.4 mile loop that ends at some of the neatest natural caves and waterfalls in the area.

Taylor Mountain is another winner come spring or summer. If its views don't take your breath away, the incline surely will. It begins at the Coal Creek trailhead and loops for 7.2 miles.

Beginner and Casual Trails

Scenic chairlift trails are definitely easy. For the first half, the chair does all the work! At the top, the views of the Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area will steal your breath away. And once you get it back, you can enjoy the easy jaunt back down to the base of the mountain.

Big Springs features a short trail around its trout fishing pond. At the end is the historic cabin of the German-born Johnny Sack, who crafted his home and its accompanying water wheel from nearby trees.

Mesa Falls trail brings you front and center to a pair of the few undisturbed waterfalls left in the West. The Snake River tumbles 114 feet over Upper Mesa, while Lower Mesa drops 65 feet. Manmade walks and railing along the trail afford the viewing pleasure to all visitors.
