Daring the Double Diamonds: Skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is a privilege. With the famed Western town of Jackson
as the nearest "major metropolitan" area, the Wyoming mountain country opens up to
thousands of square acres of powder. And we're talking powder! This region averages
more than 500 inches a year. The Jackson Hole ski resorts are big enough, challenging
enough, beautiful enough, or all of the above to keep you from ever having to leave
this slice of Wyoming.
For downhill skiing Jackson Hole-style, there are four major ski resorts to remember.
First, there's the "The Big One", the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. It got that
nickname simply because most people who have ever skied it believe Jackson Hole to be
the best ski area in all of North America. That doesn't detract from the other local
resorts, as you'll see, such as Snow King just above Jackson or Grand Targhee Resort.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village offers thousands of vertical feet of
some of the best skiing in Jackson Hole. The resort is made up of two mountains, Apres
Vous Mountain and Rendezvous Mountain. Apres Vous, or AV, caters to the intermediate
skier, as well as snowboarders with its half pipes and terrain parks. Rendezvous, on
the other hand, offers those stunning solitary plummets that you imagine of Wild West
skiing.
Grand Targhee Summer and Ski Resort, sprawled on the other side of the Teton Mountains
in Alta, also combines two mountains in one phenomenal resort. Grand Targhee boasts
more than 2,000 acres of terrain that can be reached by a lift. And that terrain gets
some of the heaviest snowfalls in the area. That's saying a lot.
Snow King Resort lies just above the town of Jackson, making it the most convenient
skiing spot for those who want to enjoy an "urban" lifestyle. Geographically speaking,
Snow King isn't really in the mountains. It's in the foothills of the Gros Ventre
Mountains, but out West, the foothills are bigger than the regular mountains back
East! This cozy, comfortable resort has two doubles and one triple chairlift, and
even an old-fashioned surface tow. Don't let the small size fool you. According to
local lore, one of Snow King's trails has the steepest start in North America.
White Pine ski area is another smaller, quieter resort in the area. Located near
Pinedale, White Pine has miles of both groomed and ungroomed slopes that are
typically a lot less crowded than the other mountains. The ski area even has trails
that can take intrepid adventurers into the Bridger Wilderness and the Bridger-Teton
Forest.
These Jackson Hole ski resorts make Wyoming one of the worst kept secrets in North
America. It's hard to keep the word from getting out just how fantastic the downhill
skiing in Jackson Hole is.
