"Board" Out of Your Mind: Snowboarding in Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Snowboarding in Jackson Hole is a religious experience for some. Sure, the converts
usually happen to be 19, have five piercings, six tattoos, and a Mohawk, but even your
average everyday snowboarder can get one heck of an experience out of Jackson Hole
snowboarding.
As you probably have heard, one of Wyoming's key spots for winter fun is the
Jackson Hole ski resort, where half of the terrain is strictly for experts. Only the
best, and those who want to snowboard with them, come to this part of the world for
the powder, the pipes, and the freestyling room. Here, you'll find more black diamonds
and double diamonds than you'll know what to do with.
Snowboarders aren't bothered here either. No skiing snobbery when you're snowboarding
in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Snowboarders are allowed aboard the famous Tram just as
skiers are. The Tram takes you to most of Jackson Hole's trails and drops. Just
remember, though, if you're snowboarding near skiers, stay to their right from the
top to keep inbounds. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the important
stuff: the best places to board.
Corbet's Couloir, along with East Ridge Traverse, are possibly the most wicked
downhill runs that any snowboarder could ever dream (or have nightmares) about.
Accessed by the Tram, these two runs are not for beginners, or intermediates for that
matter. Try your luck only if you have the skills and, of course, if you're feeling
lucky.
Saratoga Bowl, on the lower half of Apris Vous Mountain, is another steepy that's
not for the faint of heart. If you venture to these parts, however, be sure to find
the Saint John traverse to make it back to the rest of the resort. Otherwise, hopefully
you remember how to start a fire the Boy Scout way, because you could be left
camping it in the rough.
Teewinot face is also on the lower half of Apris Vous, but it's far more suitable for
boarders who want to enjoy themselves at a more leisurely pace. You can also ride the
Crystal Spring Chairlift and the Casper Bowl Chair on this side of the mountain to
find other fun terrain, such as Sleeping Indian or Moran Woods.
Snow King Ski Area is where to go if you want the best freestyling, halfpipe
snowboarding in the Jackson Hole region. Sure, you could stay at the Jackson Hole
resort for the halfpipe underneath Teewinot Chair, but nearby Snow King is where
it's at. Tracks such as Gros Venture will keep you busy all day long.
Sundance Gully and Dick's Ditch, believe or not, are natural halfpipes in the
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, area. For these freestyle courses, you'll have no worries
about mad crowds, closed courses, or other hassles of a resort setting.
