The town of Driggs was named after a gentleman called B.W. Driggs, who originally bought this
tract of land in Teton Valley in the 1880s to farm it. Driggs' project was such a success
that it became a town, and that town became county seat of Teton County and home to
approximately 1,700 residents and counting. More impressively, today Driggs has become one
of the hottest real estate regions this side of Jackson Hole.
A lot of the success of Driggs doesn't have to do with the potatoes that the original
settlers grew, but more with the town's proximity to some of the best skiing in North
America. There is of course Jackson Hole about 40 miles away on the other side of the
Grand Tetons, but Driggs is best known as the hometown of the Grand Targhee Ski Resort.
This premier winter resort is like eastern Idaho in general: It offers all the pristine
scenery and winter fun as the bigger resorts in Wyoming, with a lot less crowds and
commotion. Hence, Driggs has the reputation as the "the quiet side of the Tetons".
That makes it the ideal home for families or couples looking to truly ensconce themselves
in the not-altogether-Wild West. Take Driggs proper. Its downtown and surrounding
neighborhoods are a rare mix of traditional western style, modern Cowboy look, and the truly
alternative and artistic. It truly demonstrates how the more established residents of Driggs
have opened up their community to new neighbors.
The town is also green friendly, which sounds like a "duh!" statement considering its
exquisite location at 6,200 feet up in the Teton Valley, but Driggs truly makes an effort to
maintain a mix between commercialism and community, between development and neighborhoods.
The city of Driggs holds as many as 17 acres solely for park use, with the main 5-acre
Driggs City Park located right in the heart of town. Fields include something for every age
group, from t-ball to softball diamonds, swing-sets to basketball courts, ice-skating rink
to the ultimate Frisbee field.
Don't get Driggs wrong, though. It does have its quiet and family side, but the town also
knows how to treat its residents to fun, as well. Besides the year-round outdoor fun that
can be had, skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, and such, Driggs also plays host to the Mountain
Arts Festival in July. This annual event has as its highlight a race with more than 30 hot
air balloons, not to mention a parade, rodeo, and craft fair. The town also opens itself up
to the world during August's Annual Bluegrass Festival. Old B.W. Driggs would be proud of
how far his farm has grown.
